Lake Powell

Lake Powell

Glen Canyon Dam was built on the Colorado River for the purpose of water storage and to generate power. It also achieved the distinction of creating the second largest reservoir in North America - Lake Powell, 186 square miles of wild and breathtaking beauty. It has 1,960 miles of shoreline winding along sandy beaches, towering red and buff carved walls, and cliffs. Because most of the shoreline is accessible only by water, a boat enhances the visit. There are hundreds of side canyons and coves to explore where evidence of ancient Native Americans can be seen.

To get to Lake Powell, take Highway 24 east to Hanksville, and then SR-95 south from there. SR-276 splits off of SR-95 about 25 miles south of Hanksville and leads to the lake.

The waters of Lake Powell are warmed by the desert sun and are perfect for summer fun, including swimming, scuba diving and water skiing. Visitors enjoy Lake Powell boating and fishing in both summer and winter. The Lake is one of the best fishing holes around and Rainbow Bridge is a must see attraction while at Lake Powell. Since the building of the dam, boaters can navigate to the very base of the bridge. The massive rock arches to a height of 190 feet and is 270 feet across, making it the largest natural bridge in the world. Lake Powell camping or houseboating are also popular and enjoyable attractions.

If you are a lover of water sports and of the beauty of nature, here the two merge and become an unforgettable memory.
